Twenty artists, ten from Asia and ten from the United States, will be selected through a highly competitive review process. Each Fellow will be provided with travel expenses, housing, meals and a modest stipend for the duration of the residency.

Selection Criteria

  • excellence in performance and/or creative work in the areas of music, theater, and dance.
  • proven interest in intercultural issues, as evidenced by creative projects or research
  • history of collaborative production and demonstrated artistic productivity
  • early to mid-career artists
  • communication skills in written and spoken English

Traditional and contemporary performing artists from Asia and the United States are invited to apply. Special care will be given in the selection process to ensure a balance across discipline, age, and gender. Artists who are active in the community as educators, artistic directors, and cultural workers are encouraged to apply.

Four writers, two from Asia and two from the United States will be selected. A fifth Fellow will be selected from the UCLA faculty. Each Fellow will be provided with travel expenses, housing, meals, and a modest stipend for the duration of residency.

Selection Criteria

  • experience and interest in an aspect of the performing arts, e.g. creative, technical, intercultural
  • published work in research, criticism, commentary or advocacy concerning the performing arts
  • cross-cultural or multicultural experience with Asia
  • experience/interest in collaborative projects, learning communities, participant observation, or experimental modes of inquiry
  • ability to effectively interact, work and write in an intensive environment
  • strong communication skills in written and spoken English

Recognizing the value of independent scholarship and the multiplicity of approaches found in Asia and America, applicants may be scholars, teachers, researchers, writers, journalists, or culture/arts advocates. Applicants with expertise in diverse fields such as cultural studies, dance ethnology, ethnomusicology, history, and theater are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to writers with performance experience.
