Admissions Policies and Procedures
The Department of World Arts and Cultures admits new students for the
fall quarter of each academic year. The application filing period is November
1-30 for enrollment in September of the following year. Applications for
admission are available at California high schools and community colleges.
Out-of-state students may obtain applications by contacting the UCLA
Undergraduate Admissions Office. Online applications may be found
at www.ucop.edu/pathways.
All applicants to World Arts and Cultures must meet the admission eligibility
requirements of the University of California. California Community College
students are advised to follow the IGETC plan (consult your community
college counselor). All other transfer students are encouraged to make
progress toward completion of the School of the Arts and Architecture's
General Education requirements.
Request for Supplementary Application Materials
After the UC application has been submitted, the department
will send all applicants an email requesting supplementary additional
information. Applicants who do not submit a completed packet will not
be considered for admission. Postmarked deadline to send in supplemental
application materials is usually early in January.
The Request for Supplementary Materials will include a questionnaire
requesting the following: 1) A statement describing any background relevant
to your interest in World Arts and Cultures, including experience in
artistic and/or community work. This should not be in resume form. 2)
An essay describing and commenting on a recent experience of artistic
or cultural expression and how it has effected you. These narrative
statements are given considerable weight.
Two letters of recommendation are required in support of the
applicant's academic abilities and involvement in the arts and/or related
cultures. These letters must be submitted directly to the departmental
office. (The address will be provided in the Request for Supplementary
Materials).
Current transcripts are also required, and may be unofficial,
but should cover all work up to date..
All applicants will be asked to providea research paper hwritten
for a class demonstrating writing and research skills.
All applicants are asked to include a copy of the two essays submitted
for their original UC application.
As an option, applicants may also choose to submit
additional creative materials: short story, collection of poems, or
visual materials such as photographs, dvd’s, or artwork or designs.
Applicants for the Dance concentration are also required to
audition in late January. Information regarding the audition
will be included with the Request for Supplementary Materials.
